December 20, 2012 - Evelyn Young

Trunk show and lecture.  She is an award winning quilter and created Marula Designs, quilt patterns featuring fabric from South Africa.  Her quilt, Monkey Business, was showcased in Love of Quilting Mar/Apr 2011.  Evelyn Young got hooked on sewing the day she made a dress for a high school dance from $5 worth of velvet bought on sale at Klines’ Department Store in Joliet.  After that came theatrical costuming, more clothing construction, and eventually professional alterations, but she never expected to be a quilter.  She watched her mother trace templates and cut shapes with scissors.  That was not for her.  In 1998, she became an empty nester, discovered rulers, mats, rotary cutters, long-arm quilters for hire, and quilt shops with wonderful fabric.  Since then she has made hundreds of quilts for various purposes – charity baby and valor quilts, utility lap and bed quilts for friends, family and herself, 3 donations to the NQA Little Quilt Auction, and complex quilts that allow her to refine skills.  She is a traditional quilter with a fondness for civil war fabrics and rich colors with depth.  She enjoys fabric acquisition, piecing, appliqué, and quilting equally and is delighted when the final stitch in the binding is complete.  Evelyn is an active member of Hands All Around Quilt Guild of Central Illinois.  She has displayed her quilts in local quilt shows, the Des Moines AQS show, and the NQA show in Columbus, OH.  She has written several patterns under the Marula Designs name; two have been published in the Fons and Porter magazine.
